Determination and Passion are part of the Formula for Success
When starting a business one of the major hurdles is accessing finance to get that dream of the ground. But what comes next?
A lot of the time a large emphasis is placed on getting the finance that is needed, however a large majority of business are successful due to the determination and passion of the owner and its what we look for in all applications that come into Foundation East.
Our best example of this is one of our clients Brad Francis who will tell you that for him it wasn't just about gaining access to the finance but the additional parts that came along with it combined with his passion and determination. So have a quick read at his inspirational story below.
Brad Francis is an award winning magazine publisher and has worked in the business for more than 25 years. He has represented some of the biggest names in the national press, consumer magazines and b2b journals. In 1992 aged just 29, he suffered a stroke and requires some assistance walking with the help of sticks and a wheelchair. As a media volunteer for the Stroke Association, he was invited to address the Conservative Party Conference at Blackpool in 2004.
Following redundancy Brad established Brad Francis Media in October 2010 to originally sell advertising space. In 2011 he took a loan from Foundation East using it to restructure debts, purchase equipment and to attend a training course in Google Adwords and Social Media marketing. Coupled with this loan came business coaching from Jayne Bratton. The Bratton Group has worked with Foundation East for several years to coach and mentor its clients.
Brad continues the story;
‘The first year of trading as BFM was geared towards ad sales and management for my clients in the consumer publishing sector. However, after coaching from Jane and hardcore training, I saw myself at the opposite end of the spectrum offering a bespoke service to my clients with an eclectic mix of PR, advertising, sales, marketing, social media and media consultancy. I have also changed my business dynamic from selling advertising space in the consumer electronics industry to focus on social media integration. This shift has resulted in award winning PR for my clients. The training I have undertaken means I can now create websites and offer a more consultative service.’
Moving on Brad is expanding into different markets. Unsurprisingly he is pitching his media consultancy expertise to clients serving the vibrant disability industry.
‘Inspirational Independent Living’ is my strap line for the disability sector’, says Brad,’ and I have now acquired three new contracts in this market and write a regular monthly column for leading trade journal Disability. Moreover, as a media volunteer for The Stroke Association, I feel that I can offer my clients something unique and distinctive to the disability market. After all, I use products and services aimed at the disabled consumer and this understanding could prove invaluable.’
Now working for five clients Brad’s diary is always full. So he has taken on a freelance associate and there are plans to further increase the team, relocate offices and allow the business to flourish organically.
On Foundation East’s involvement Brad concludes;
‘I can’t speak highly enough of Foundation East and Jayne Bratton. They have been fundamental in the change in my business. Receiving the money was not the main factor for me. What has been crucial are the advice and the support network which gave me the confidence to move out of my comfort zone and focus on generating a successful business. Jayne’s coaching has had a massive impact on my vocation and Bob’s input has been vital to the strategic growth of my business.
When it comes to a loan application, Foundation East Business Loans Managers are looking for business acumen, passion and drive. In this instance Bob Shimmon found all three in abundance – and then some.
