Caffejnica of Peterborough

The desire for Eastern European bread and pastries to be appreciated by a wider audience was the driver for Andris Asermanis to start his Lithuanian Bakery and coffee shop in Cambridgeshire.

Caffejnica, which is situated just off the Cathedral Square in the main town of Peterborough, offers freshly made bread, pastries and great coffee. Caffejnica is rustic and relaxed, giving the impression of a warming cabin with its log lined walls and simplistic décor coupled with the sweet and fruity smell of the in house bakery. The aroma of the traditional Lithuanian breads and cakes seeps into the street, causing heads to turn intrigued by the presence of a Lithuanian bakery in such an urban and built up area.

Andris originally approached Foundation East 2 years ago with an idea for his bakery. In order to assess a businesses for viability Foundation East requires sight and understanding of a business plan and cash flow forecast.  Unfortunately Andris had neither, so Bob Shimmon, Foundation East’s Business Loans Manager for Cambridgeshire recommended that he seek support in developing his plans and guided him to a local enterprise agency where he was also able to attend workshops to help him with his business skills.

Having developed a plan Andris re-applied to Foundation East with a request for funding, but unfortunately the plan was still not one that Bob considered viable, due mainly to the size of the funding request.  Undeterred Andris once again took Bob’s advice and began his search for more modest premises, reducing the customer spend and turnover expectations.  Encouraged by Andris’ determination, passion and persistence despite many setbacks, along with a now viable proposition enabled Bob to support the application this time.  Andris opened Caffejnica in November 2014 and now employs 4 people. As well as the café/bakery Andris supplies breads and pastries to other local businesses and has plans to further increase his productivity to supply larger businesses.  The marketing team caught up with Andris in September, where they sampled some of his delicious, beautifully presented cakes and enjoyed a coffee.

“The loan from Foundation East allowed me to purchase larger, more efficient ovens in order to increase productivity and meet the demands from my customers. I was able to use some of the money to style Caffejnica in the unique way I was hoping for. Without the help of Bob, Caffejnica would not be where it is today.  I am proud of the work we have achieved so far.”
