Clear Blue Pools – Swimmingly Achieving More
Business name: Clear Blue Pools
Business type: Sole Trader
Industry: Hot Tub, Spa and Pool Maintenance services
Having worked within the leisure industry for almost a decade, David noticed a niche in the market. “The company I was working with looked after the wet leisure sector locally,” said David. “We mainly dealt with large public swimming pools and during my daily work I saw there was a gap in the market. Individuals in the area who owned swimming pools and hot tubs also had a need for regular maintenance services. Therefore I decided to go freelance and provide a comprehensive service for existing pool owners with a personal touch.”
David believes he delivers a new quality to the industry. He worked as a lifeguard and first aider, trained with ISRM (Institute of Sports and Recreation Management), is qualified and registered with RoPPP (Register of Pool Plant Professionals), which gives him a unique combination of skills and experience.
However experienced in the industry he was new to the world of business and launching a new venture can be tricky. Especially if it involves new equipment – for Clear Blue Pools this proved to be the biggest challenge.
He was awarded a small grant after completing a business start up course with the NWES. This, together with funding kindly provided by his supportive family, was enough to make first steps on the path of bringing this new company to life.
“Although the initial support I received got me started I still needed further investment,” said David. “I needed to buy a vehicle, equipment and fund my marketing campaign if the business was going to be a success. Because I was just starting out without a previous business background, I was unable to get funding from the banks. However NatWest put me in touch with Foundation East.”
David applied for a business loan, which made it possible for him to develop his venture a little further. Initially, he decided to run Clear Blue Pools alongside his regular job as a fitness instructor and lifeguard with a plan of making it his sole income.
“Getting the backing from Foundation East has made a huge difference to my life,” said David. “Without it I would never have been able to get the business off the ground.”
Where they are today
David runs the business with the help of his wife and they are in their fifth year of trading. He has developed his skills to include a full Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers technician with additional electronics qualifications and he is constantly expanding his customer base.
