About Us

Foundation East is an Industrial and Provident Society, recognised by HM Revenue and Customs as an exempt charity. It is a democratic organisation controlled by its members. These are individuals and organisations that support its vision:

To increase prosperity and quality of life by providing finance to viable businesses that have been refused bank finance and to facilitate the creation of Community Land Trusts in the East of England.

Foundation East raises capital by selling shares in the Society and also through grants from charitable and other foundations. This capital raised is then deposited with its bankers Unity Trust who in turn lend funds to Foundation East. This leverage mechanism enables the Society to make loans to viable, but not bankable businesses, in Cambridge, Bedfordshire, Suffolk, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Essex.

Since its formation in 2004, Foundation East has been successful in obtaining grant finance from numerous grant giving bodies including EEDA, Cambridgeshire Business Limited and Norwich Local Enterprise Growth Initiative. These bodies have recognised that granting capital and some running costs to Foundation East proves better value for money than establishing loan products of their own.

There is a growing consensus across society, that a more pragmatic approach is needed to support local businesses, and of the wider benefits that can be gained from maintaining employment in the community.

Foundation East demonstrates that new thinking is possible and it is making a difference to peoples’ lives.

Foundation East is a trading name of Foundation East Limited an Industrial and Provident Society. This is a non-profit organisation established for community benefit, with open membership.  Both individuals and companies can apply for membership, and we are keen to increase our number of members. 

The Board of Directors are elected annually from the membership in a one member one vote ballot.
