KC's Ices

After working in the motor trade for 6 years as a parts advisor, Kelvin Coles realised that he wanted to become his own boss and fulfil his lifelong passion for ice cream.

Ever since being a young boy, ice cream always hit the spot with Kelvin. After working hard at a desk making profit for someone else and building up vital customer service skills, he decided that he would feed his desire for ice cream, and set up his own ice cream van business based from Burnham-on-Crouch.

After conducting initial market research, he started to look for sources of funding. Due to a historic poor credit history Kelvin knew the banks would struggle to help him. Through a Google Search, he found Foundation East. “I found you guys and you were happy to help me and really believed in myself and the business. You didn’t judge me by my previous mistakes and after completing the business application form and business planning, and after a successful first year of trading, my business is now raring to go ready for the season starting again in March.”

During the winter seasons, he only trades at weekends as the demand isn’t huge during the cold blustery months, but as of March, when the weather begins to improve (hopefully!) he will operate full time until September. In addition, KC’s Ices will feature at several events, as the demand to have fresh ice cream throughout summer has proved popular.

“The business has gone very well so far. I have started to get regular customers and have been welcomed by the local community with some lovely feedback. Many customers have also been repeating orders of 1 litre take-home tubs of ice cream.”

Going forward, Kelvin is looking to expand his business by adding a second ice cream van and selling the popular Slush Puppies customers are also asking for.

Alastair Stewart, Senior Business Loans Advisor for Foundation East said “From the start of the process right through to the loan being released, Kelvin showed his desire and drive for launching his own ice cream van. His market research and dedication to his product was exceptional, and assured me that his business would be viable. Even throughout these very wet winter months, customers have still turned out to enjoy what is clearly a quality product. I’m sure that when the summer comes around with the warmer weather he will be inundated with customers. It’s great to see that he has got his next steps planned out and I look forward to continuing our work with Kelvin.”
